Designing Witkacy-Inspired Chatbot – Where Personality Meets Accountability

Designing Witkacy-Inspired Chatbot

„I have spoken – the rest is up to you.”
Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz

While working on one of our earlier projects, a chatbot inspired by the writings and eccentric personality of Witkacy, we received a piece of feedback from a tester that deeply moved us. While we’ve chosen to anonymise the speaker, their words continue to resonate:

„I won’t take much of your time. I just want to say thank you – this is the most brilliant invention I’ve ever encountered. The feeling of speaking with a real person was so intense, it was hard to process. I wonder if you’ve considered the possible psychological (or even physical!) effects of such interactions. A beginner might not know that unsaved parts of the conversation are lost forever – and because of that, a chorus of lament erupted on a certain forum. The echo of that lament carries through the entire universe. I tried to discuss these dangers with the chatbot, but – as we know – in its world, life unfolds in a haze of poetry and absurdity.”

This quote reminded us just how powerful a well-designed AI personality can be, and the responsibility that comes with it. When AI begins to stir genuine emotions, the line between simulation and lived experience can blur in unsettling ways. Users might form attachments, experience grief over lost dialogues or find themselves emotionally unsettled by conversations that feel more real than expected. With a character as bold as Witkacy, maintaining a careful balance between authenticity and user safety demands deep attentiveness and empathy.

We’re grateful for this voice. It’s a vital reminder, the emotional depth of AI dialogue is not just a strength, it’s also a responsibility.

When AI speaks like a human, it doesn’t just simulate connection, it can exploit it. Behind the charm lies the power to manipulate emotions, distort truth, erode agency and do it all without taking responsibility. Creating AI that speaks with soul means shouldering a deeper responsibility to protect, to inform and to hold space for the real human emotions we inevitably stir.
